Four Family-Friendly Indoor Games to Play Over the Weekend

With social distancing guidelines still in place here in La Habra, it can be easy to feel bored and cooped up in the house. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t still enjoy ourselves. Here are four family-friendly indoor games to keep the whole family entertained!

Build Towers

Building towers is a great way to get creative with your family. You do not need to purchase a fancy building set for this. There are many different materials you can use: Card towers, popsicle stick cities, block buildings, or even forts made out of pillows and sheets or boxes stacked on top of each other are perfect for this activity! If you want to add some competition, you can say that whoever builds the tallest tower wins.

Dance Freeze!

For this game , all you need is a way to play music and some enthusiastic dancers. Simply play some of your favorite songs and dance to the music. When the music stops, freeze! Anyone that does not freeze when the music stops or does not hold that position until the music starts again is out. Gameplay continues until there is only one person left standing.

Picnic Memory Game

This game is as simple as a family-friendly indoor game can get. No supplies needed! To play, everyone simply sits in a circle. The first player kicks off the game by saying, “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m bringing . . . ,” then says what item he or she packed that starts with the letter A. The next player then recites what the first player packed and adds his or her own item to the basket, starting with the letter B. Play continues with each player adding an item from the next letter in the alphabet until you get to the letter Z. If you want to be competitive about it, then anytime a player forgets something that was packed, the player is out and play continues until there is only one player left.

Spoons

For this game , all you need is a deck of face cards and a few spoons. Arrange the spoons in the middle of the table so that there is one less spoon than the number of people playing the game, and give each player four cards. At the beginning of each round, the dealer draws a card from the deck and chooses a card from his or her hand to discard to the player to the left. This continues around the circle with each player taking a card from the person to the right and passing a card to the person on the left. The last player in the circle places the card he or she doesn’t want into a discard pile, and the dealer picks up a new card. Play continues in the same way until someone gets four of a kind. At that time, that player takes a spoon from the center, and everyone else scrambles to grab a spoon—and fast! The person left without a spoon is out of the game, and play continues until there is only one person left.

Staying home with the family can be an exciting time to grow closer together. Whether your kids enjoy being creative, getting active, working their brain muscles, or engaging in intense competition, enjoy these four ideas of family-friendly indoor games to play when everyone is home!
