Are you finding yourself working from home for the first time? COVID-19 has many workers in this unfamiliar situation. There are some pros and cons to working from home, and some people find it easier than others. If this is a completely new situation for you, here are five tips to help you have a great experience:
Create a Dedicated Workstation
Find a place in your apartment to dedicate to work. Consider designating a specific room as the home office, or you can even block off a section of the kitchen table. Make sure you have everything you need, from a comfortable chair to a water bottle to a pair of earplugs to minimize distractions.
Block out Time for Work
Working from home can make your hours much more flexible, but it’s a good idea to set aside specific times for work so you can focus and get the job done. If you need to take care of errands or family duties, plan for them. When all of your duties have a dedicated block of time, they’re more likely to get done, and you’re less likely to feel stressed.
Get out of the House Each Day
Stay-at-home orders may be in place, but they do still allow for some outdoor activity. Set aside a time each day to take a break and clear your head by breathing in some fresh air while keeping a safe distance from others . Whatever it is, plan for it and make sure you get out of that house.
Make a To-Do List
It can be really easy to get distracted at home! Making a to-do list can help you focus and can also help you take a step back if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Set Limits for Phone Use
If you haven’t set limits for using certain apps on your phone , now’s the time to do it! There’s nothing wrong with a little Facebook or Instagram break, but it can be easy to just keep scrolling when your boss isn’t around. Set a timer or choose a time limit with a screen time app, and then focus back on work when the time’s up.
Many of us are working from home for the first time, which can have challenges as well as advantages. By creating a dedicated workstation, blocking out time for work, getting out of the house each day, making a to-do list, and setting time limits for phone use, you’re on a great track for a successful work-from-home experience!
